ABOUT NICHELLE NICHOLS

Nichelle Nichols is an American actress and singer. As Lieutenant Uhura on the legendary television series Star Trek, Nichols played, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, "the first non-stereotypical role portrayed by a black woman in television history." Nichols also began volunteering her time with NASA, in a highly effective campaign to recruit minority and female personnel for the space agency. She has continued to appear in various television and film roles, and continued her charitable missions.

JBN Team was invited to cover an intimate and very special celebration of Nichelle Nichols' 85th Birthday! The event was filled of Nichelle's family and friends, as well as to a select few fans who would like to come join Nichelle for this special day.



Birthday Girl NICHELLE NICHOLS Celebrates her 85th Birthday, along with Family, Friends, and Fans, including NASA Astronaut Mae Carol Jemison, an American engineer, and physician. She became the first African American woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992, actor and singer Robert Davi (License to Kill), actress/singer Carmen Carter(singer on Dancing with the Stars), actress Katrina Van Derham (Leah Remini: It's All Relative), actress/producer Angelique Fawcette, writer/director Steven Fawcett, and singer Chantel Steinreich, among others.

JBN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW


Nichelle Nichols is best known for her groundbreaking portrayal of Lieutenant Uhura on the Original Star Trek television series and as one of the first African American characters on American television not portrayed as a servant. After an early career as a vocalist and dancer for live jazz orchestras, she turned to acting in film and television. She has recorded albums, written a memoir and science-fiction novels. She has also worked hard to recruit women and minorities to NASA.

Nichols’ early career was singing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. Her film debut was in 1959 as an uncredited dancer in the film adaptation of Porgy and Bess starring Sidney Poitier.

Her most notable role would be the communications officer for the Starship Enterprise as Lieutenant (later commander) Uhura. The name “Uhura” was adapted from the Swahili word for freedom, “uhuru”. Her role was groundbreaking as she portrayed a confident African-American woman in an authoritative role that immediately drew notice with the Star Trek audience. Besides, the television series, Nichols also appeared in six Star Trek motion pictures
.



Legendary Icon, Nichelle Nichols will celebrate her 85th Birthday on Thursday, December 28, 2017. A favorite actress of fans worldwide, and a trailblazer for women to be considered for substantial positions in the aerospace industry through NASA, she also opened the doors for many women, as a whole, and especially women of color for acting roles of a significant position versus simply a housewife, maid or secretary.

Ms. Nichols, who is a frequent guest at conventions and events across the globe, travels extensively and enjoys meeting the fans. Private, intimate birthday parties are usually the norm for Nichols, who decided to include 35 lucky fans in on the festivities this year to mark the milestone birthday.

  1. A 1968 episode of Star Trek, "Plato's Stepchildren", which first aired on November 22, 1968, is often referred to as the first interracial kiss on American television.... She's looking good , isn't she?
