TAMZIN MERCHANT — IMOGEN SPURNROSE
Tamzin Merchant first came to international audiences playing Georgiana Darcy in Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice. She has gone on to roles in the Oscar Award-nominated Jane Eyre directed by Cary Fukunaga, Mark Raso’s Copenhagen, David Blair’s The Messenger and Stéphanie Di Giusto’s The Dancer, which was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes Film Festival in 2016.

Merchant is best known for playing the role of Anne Hale in three seasons of the hit WGN show Salem and for her starring role as Catherine Howard in Showtime’s The Tudors. Other television credits include the BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood and the BBC’s My Family & Other Animals.

Merchant will next be seen as the character Imogen Spurnrose in the upcoming Amazon Original series Carnival Row in which she will star opposite Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne.

Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne) and the Black Raven plot payback for the unjust oppression inflicted by The Burgue’s human leaders, Jonah Breakspear (Arty Froushan) and Sophie Longerbane (Caroline Ford). 

Tourmaline Larou (Karla Crome) inherits supernatural powers that threaten her fate and the future of The Row. And, after escaping The Burgue and her vengeful brother Ezra (Andrew Gower), Imogen Spurnrose (Tamzin Merchant) and her partner Agreus Astrayon (David Gyasi) encounter a radical new society which upends their plans. With humans and fae folk divided and freedom on the line, each hero will face impossible dilemmas and soul-defining tests in the epic conclusion of Carnival Row.

She ran with that idea when developing the script for Pappy Hour, but created the story using fictional characters. She also added her very own awkward, dark comedic twist.

Mark Rivers - An American Treasure!
Mark was born and raised in Atlanta, GA where he spent the majority of his formative years watching sitcom reruns and listening to Rush albums. He took up the drums and, not surprisingly, his early bands all sounded like Georgia teenagers trying to play Canadian prog rock.

Mark learned a thing or two studying music at Georgia State University, then three more things at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, though he spent most of his time there hanging out with his aspiring comedian friends at Emerson College. He even had an Emerson dining hall card.

Somewhere in there Mark dropped out of Berklee to start a band called the Cavedogs which would eventually release several CDs on Capitol Records and tour the country exhaustively. Occasionally the band would team up with their comedian friends and perform music-comedy bits that at the time seemed hilarious, but would now probably be embarrassing. Nonetheless, Mark’s passion for comedy writing was born.

When the band broke up, Mark started a dog walking business!

One day Mark’s old friend David Cross called and hired him to write the theme song for Mr. Show with Bob and David. Sensing new opportunities, Mark saved his dog walking money and moved to Los Angeles where he has spent many years resisting the temptation to start yet another band and to pick up dog shit. Instead, Mark found work writing comedy and composing television music with a particular knack for comedy tunes and theme songs.

Mark has been a staff writer on several shows, including Robert Smigel’s TV Funhouse and Jimmy Kimmel Live. He has also created and produced the pilots Let’s Fish and Krog for Cartoon Network. He has composed music for Mr. Show, Parks and Recreation, Louie CK, Human Giant and lots, lots more.

Geddy Lee would be proud.

Poppy Gordon is an NYC based director. She has developed campaigns spanning across print, film, radio and new media as well as created visuals for launch events and immersive experiences. She excels at visually driven narratives that combine bold cinematic style with pop influenced VFX. Poppy has directed work for brands such as NIKE, WAV, Nexxus, Pond’s, TRESemmé, Erin Fetherston, 350Action and many more. She studied in Switzerland at the European Graduate School under avant-garde film directors Chris Kraus, Claire Denis and Catherine Breillat.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

There is so much that unheard voices have to contribute to popular culture and, hopefully, Hollywood’s recent empowerment efforts are the start of real change. But why does it feel like we are only being “allowed” a voice? Why does representation feel like “representation?” Starring Samantha Robinson (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Love Witch), my film satirically distills the filmmaking process into a single conversation. Over lattes and cappuccinos, the privileged few riff on society’s inequities to decide who gets to be seen and heard. And as our characters pat themselves on the back, the audience is left to question their own entitlement. 

With my For Your Consideration, I want to challenge the existing power structures of popular culture. As a female filmmaker working with Mexican-American screenwriter (Aldo Arias), I believe it’s absolutely essential to hold a magnifying glass to Hollywood’s representation efforts. It’s the only way to ensure that our stories aren’t co-opted solely for the profit of the gatekeepers. By inviting introspection — in addition to action — we can keep empowerment from becoming tokenism.

Determined to party at Sundance, three entitled young women meet up at an LA member’s only club to make a selection-worthy short film. In an unholy fusion of wokeness and cluelessness, they build a narrative from atop the high perch of their privilege. And piece-by-piece, they almost, almost, almost give a voice to the voiceless — just without ever having any idea what they’re talking about. But they are perfectly positioned to make it happen.
