Vlog Post with Melissa Lemon

Book Nerd Vlog Post

Melissa has had many imaginary friends (and enemies) since she was a child. Her vivid imagination had her writing stories and jotting down book ideas for years until she finally sat down and finished a novel. She is married to an awesome man and the proud mother of three children. Music is also an important part of her life and she shares time with her music students teaching them piano, cello or guitar. Melissa is a graduate of the University of Utah and currently resides in the Salt Lake area.

Stuck in her family's apple orchards, Kat's got plenty of work to do and only pesky Jeremy to help. But when Jeremy convinces her to run away, Kat will discover that nothing---and no one---in her life is quite what it seems. Wonderfully reimagined, this is the magical tale of Snow White as you've never read it before!

Melissa Lemon’s Snow Whyte and the Queen of Mayhem is a different, yet cleverly written take on the Snow White story. Perhaps the most noticeable difference is that the Queen is Katiyana’s (Snow White) birth mother. We are all familiar with the Queen’s feelings towards Snow White, but to have that same feeling when the Queen is the mother, totally changes the mood to a very dark and very sinister-like tale. Another facet that makes the story worthwhile is having a perspective of the trapped man in the Queen’s mirror, Jasper. This adds a whole new element and almost gives readers a totally new story.

Being jealous of her husband’s love for their daughter, Katiyana (Kat), the Queen goes on a rage and swears to have Kat killed. But soon her plans are foiled when King Frederick is able to escape with his daughter to a neighboring kingdom. Kat is taken under the care of the King’s brother, her Uncle Barney.

Readers will enjoy just how twisted this story is. There are things in this unique retelling that would make the Disney version hide for cover in terror. First, as I’ve mentioned already, Queen Radiance is the birth mother of Snow White (Kat) and she wants to murder her! The abuse Kat endures from her thought-to-be caring uncle and there are relationships that Snow White has that would have never existed in the original tale.

Melissa’s unique take in this Snow White rework is absolutely amazing. It makes for perfect opportunities to leave readers in shock and disbelief. Even the love story within this version is jaw-dropping. Melissa’s writing style is fluid-like, easy to follow, and gentle to the eyes, even though it is very dark. Readers will thoroughly enjoy this retelling of one of the most treasured classics. Like the original, Snow Whyte and the Queen of Mayhem, is filled with mystery, magic, evil, love, and murder. Expect something very special from Melissa and her own unique spice to this classic.
