Guest Post with Erin Lyon

Photo Content from Erin Lyon

Erin Lyon graduated with a bachelor's degree in English and then worked in broadcast television at the Sacramento ABC affiliate for 10 years before going to law school. She is now a practicing civil attorney and blames all of the people in her life for not trying to talk her out of the whole “becoming a lawyer” thing. After finishing law school, she completed her first novel and began working on the sequels. Erin lives in Northern California with her husband of nearly 20 years (the Saint), her two daughters (the Girls), her three rescue dogs (the Boys), and three cats, who, let’s be real, belong only to themselves. The Contract Killers is her debut novel.

Praise for UNCONDITIONALLY

"A sharp, witty, and fun debut, with both sweet and sexy moments and a heroine I want to have a drink with." ―Kimberly Lang, USA Today bestselling author of Something to Prove

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED FROM ANOTHER AUTHOR
There are two critical pieces of advice I’ve read by other authors that have really helped me.

The first was by Barbara Kingsolver who wrote that you “should never write with anyone looking over your shoulder.” All you writers get exactly what she means by that – Never tailor what the story calls for because you’re worried about your mom reading it. I’ve taken that to heart. My books are no Fifty Shades of Grey, but there is a little sex in there. And yes, my mom read it and, surprisingly, didn’t have any problem with it.

I guess the stranger part was when my husband’s family all read it…and my uncle…and my boss…and other lawyers I work with. Oddly, it has gotten easier with time. I used to get knots in my stomach thinking about family or colleagues reading the steamy stuff. Now I’m over it. Thanks, Barbara!

The other piece of advice was told through the grapevine at a writer’s conference (a friend of a friend kind of story). So someone said that they were out running at a charity event or something and they realized they were running next to none other than Stephen King. When the person mustered up the courage, he sidled up next to King and told him he was his “number one fan.” (Totally kidding. Misery joke.) But he did tell him he was a fan and then asked him how he managed to be such a prolific writer. King’s response? “Bum glue.” So yes, the golden piece of advice was to stick your butt in the chair and write. It’s simple yet brilliant. And it really is the biggest challenge – especially for writers with a full-time day job! I love a Netflix binge as much as the next girl – I just try not to allow too many when I know I should be writing.

TEN FACTS ABOUT UNCONDITIONALLY
1. Like Kate, I actually did see TWO exes while in court – and one really was in the bright orange jumpsuit.

2. The scene with the young woman who freaks out in court over the age of her in-custody baby daddy…was based on an actual event. In open court.

3. I have the giraffe spotted wine glasses that I describe getting broken in the opening scene.

4. The bar in the book, The Trunk, is actually the brain-child of my friends and me. We came up with the idea while drinking booze from the trunk of car during a girls’ trip one time and we’ve built up elaborate plans for what our bar will look like some day. No stealing our idea.

5. I did actual internet research about what kind of aquarium fish will sometimes attack others for that scene in the bar. Writing can be so educational.

6. The story about the warring exes living next door to each other is inspired by the numerous cases I’ve had where we’ve had neighbors going all Hatfields and McCoys on each other. Let me tell you – things can really get out of hand.

7. The couple fighting over the guinea pig was inspired by a story an old attorney told me about a divorcing couple paying him $500 an hour to fight over a plate. For a year.

8. The fall Kate takes in the opening scene is based on personal experience – minus the concussion.

9. Most of the legal shenanigans in Unconditionally are exaggerated far less than you might think.

10. After the fury over the cliff-hanger at the end of I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions, I made sure that Unconditionally was tied up neatly without a cliffhanger in sight.

In a world where marriage doesn’t exist—only seven-year contracts—you don’t marry, you sign. You don’t divorce, you breach. And sometimes, you just expire.

In this hilarious conclusion to Erin Lyon's I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions, Kate has accepted a job practicing signing law, the one type of law she swore she'd never do - especially since what she thought was her very own happily ever after turned into just another expired contract. But between Kate's embarrassing penchant for running into exes in court, clients determined to use her as their very own therapist, and a couple having a knock-down, drag-out over the custody of the family guinea pig, at least the job's never boring.

But while Kate finally has a handle on her career, her love life is still, well, complicated. The former love of her life, Jonathan, wants her back. Her current main squeeze, Dave, wants to take things to the next level, but she still can't shake her wolf-in-sheep's-clothing vibe about him. And then there's Adam, her mad crush who really wants to be her friend. So, to sum up, one questionable ex, one player with a capital "P," and one guy who's kind of stolen her heart even though she's in the friend zone. This should be a piece of cake.

Unconditionally is both a sweet and sexy romantic comedy and a hilariously relatable look at finding happiness where you least expect it.
