HollyShorts: The Other End of the Earth - Jacob W. Madness Interview

Jacob W. Madness is a writer, director, and producer. Jacob has amassed over a decade of experience on 1st tier productions. Originally from Detroit, his move to Los Angeles brought the good fortune of landing work on the largest scale features and TV shows for Warner Bros, Fox, Sony, and more. Jacob’s wide and varied range of experience earned him the nickname, “Jake of all trades.”

Jacob served as a writer, producer, and first AD on the viral hit trilogy of short films, “Two Bellmen” as well as the award-winning short film, “Business Unusual.”

Jacob strengthened his skills even further while leading these sets for Substance Over Hype and the Marriott Content Studio. Through this time Jacob became an owner of Substance Over Hype, and also took the helm to direct the next project for Marriott Content Studio.

Directing “The Other End of the Earth” gave Jacob the opportunity to lead a passion project for an amazing brand partner. In addition to directing, he was able to spend much of his time capturing shots for the film himself. Jacob looks to depict both strength and frailty, and aims to share moments that feel like a “slice of life” represented on a global scale.

Synopsis: Narrated by Diane Lane, The Other End of the Earth is a cinematic celebration of our beautiful world, featuring culture, destinations, and picturesque moments and features quotes from Nellie Bly, who in 1889, courageously traveled around the world in 72 days - setting a new world record. She did so despite extreme resistance, having been told that only a man could accomplish such a feat.

HollyShorts takes place August 9-18, 2018 at the TCL Chinese Theater, Harmony Gold Theater and other locations in Hollywood. Nearly 400 short films will compete for the festival’s top prizes. Last year HollyShorts finalists included 3 out of the 5 Live Action Oscar nominees and the winning short Silent Child from Rachel Shenton and Chris Overton. This year, HollyShorts received an all-time record 5,000 submissions from over 80 countries. The competition will feature Live Action, Animation and Documentary Shorts as well as web series, student shorts, music videos, TV pilots, and VR. The festival also features a screenplay competition where the winning short gets greenlit, shot and shown at next year’s festival courtesy of Seattle Film Summit.
