What was the greatest thing you learned at school?
I learned how to read, and that opened up so many worlds.

What was your favorite book as a child and why?
Anything with a dog or horse in the story.

Has reading a book ever changed your life?
Every book makes some kind of change, whether that change barely registers or opens a possibility to view the world in a different way.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to have a life in writing?
Want the fun and frustration and challenge and joy of writing stories more than you want to be published. You have to want to write those stories enough to give up TV time or social time in order to meet those imaginary people on the page and go with them on their journey.

In your newest book, WILD COUNTRY; can you tell my Book Nerd community a little about the novel?
Jana has just graduated from the police academy, with no possibility of finding a job in the human-controlled cities. Then she’s offered a job as a deputy in Bennett, but she doesn’t fully appreciate what she’s walking into. This particular story blends the flavor of the Westerns with the urban fantasy core of the Others world.

What was your inspiration for the series?
There were many threads that had to come together to create the Others’ world, but the lightbulb was when I said to myself, “What if the vampires and werewolves weren’t humans who had been changed? What if they were dominant predators who had evolved from a different branch of the evolutionary tree and had the ability to change shape in order to get closer to their prey? What would it be like to live in a world where they were at the top of the food chain?” Things progressed from there.

For those who are unfamiliar with your series; THE WORLD OF THE OTHERS, how would you introduce it?
The Others stories, whether it’s the five books set in Lakeside or these standalone stories that are set in different towns, are urban fantasy (more or less) set in a world where the supernatural beings are the dominant predators and rule the world, tolerating the presence of humans as long as the humans don’t cause trouble. Of course, the humans cause trouble. We wouldn’t have a story if they didn’t.

Which character have you enjoyed getting to know the most over the course of writing THE WORLD OF THE OTHERS?
I can’t say I enjoy the villains in the stories, but I have a lot of fun with the rest of the characters.

What are some of your current and future projects that you can share with us?
I’ve just finished writing a book set in the Black Jewels world and will be writing another one.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?
Fall in love.

In this powerful and exciting fantasy set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, humans and the shape-shifting Others will see whether they can live side by side...without destroying one another.

There are ghost towns in the world—places where the humans were annihilated in retaliation for the slaughter of the shape-shifting Others.

One of those places is Bennett, a town at the northern end of the Elder Hills—a town surrounded by the wild country. Now efforts are being made to resettle Bennett as a community where humans and Others live and work together. A young female police officer has been hired as the deputy to a Wolfgard sheriff. A deadly type of Other wants to run a human-style saloon. And a couple with four foster children—one of whom is a blood prophet—hope to find acceptance.

But as they reopen the stores and the professional offices and start to make lives for themselves, the town of Bennett attracts the attention of other humans looking for profit. And the arrival of the Blackstone Clan, outlaws and gamblers all, will uncover secrets…or bury them.
