DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
After having just finished directing my first feature film, I wondered what my next endeavor should be. Fortunately for me, I have a brilliant creative partner, who came to me with a script called, DieRy.

I immediately read it and thought, Is he nuts? I had just made a movie about two star crossed lovers who give each other a reason to go on, after having endured terribly traumatic events in their lives. I’m a romance gal. Thrillers?

But here’s the hook. My leading lady, Claudia Maree Mailer was a young girl working on a film set of a feature I produced called Blind. She was extremely beautiful and unbelievably capable at everything. She was so capable that at the end of the shoot, I asked her to work for me. To my great surprise, she agreed. For two years she ran my life like a General, until one day when I was scrolling through Facebook, I came upon a clip of Claudia doing a monologue. Now monologues are incredibly hard out of context, but Claudia was magical. She created a compelling character, nuanced and full of imagination. The most surprising part of this story is that she had never told me she was an Actor. She kept everything very professional.I immediately called her and told her how terrific she was and if/when I had the opportunity I would most definitely cast her in whatever I was doing.

There was an intricate role in my first film, The Second Sun. It takes place in flashbacks. I had the great fortune to offer Claudia the role and with barely any dialogue and only a few minutes on screen, she was incandescent. She could not be denied.

That leads me back to the hook for DieRy. Claudia was my hook. To be able to give this brilliant young artist her shot in a script that called for a Star on the precipice, that got all my creative juices going.

I have to say it was my most immersive and wonderful experience to date on a film set. Every day to be looking at my monitor and see a Star being born. I will forever be grateful.

Warmly,
Jennifer Gelfer
