JJ COOK & AJ COOK, MD attribute the creation of this novel — the first volume in the Percivious Trilogy — to the marriage of their unique skills and perspectives.

They hope this novel — and trilogy — shines a light on something the world seems to have forgotten: altruism, and its impact on society. “Something that needs a voice now more than ever but also a platform where it will be heard.”

JJ Cook’s background in marketing across a spectrum of industries (including technology, finance, and the arts) brings insight and depth to characters spanning an array of disciplines, ages, countries, and cultures.

AJ Cook, MD’s current role as chief of pediatric urology at the Alberta Children’s Hospital has allowed him the opportunity to author and contribute to numerous published studies, honing his writing skills, while his experience as a surgeon -- as well as the relationships he’s developed with his young patients and their guardians -- has contributed credibility and realism to the narrative.

What inspired you to pen your first novel?
About 8 years ago it struck me. I said to my husband (AJ Cook), “Wouldn’t it be an interesting premise for a book, if someone (or something) was able to exploit your sleep hours? The one thing that still remains ours/uninterrupted (for the most part)”. I didn’t know it at the time, but the book was hanging in the balance as I waited for his reply. As it turned out he loved the idea, and the premise for Percivious was conceived.

The lie left her lips more quickly than her head had time to work out the details.

He felt tears against his freshly shaven face, caught up in the ski mask, reminding him that he was right side up. The strand of hope to the outside world up above his head became very thin; life above him would carry on as if he’d never existed while he suffocated in darkness alone.

A lone frigate hovered overhead, creating a solid black puzzle piece that exposed the universe against the milky blue haze of the evening sky. Its forked tail acted as a rudder, a steering wheel perfected over 50 million years, equally as effective in air as in water. Its bat-like presence was unsettling at fifteen feet above the ship deck.

He could see she was running the odds of what the rest of their relationship would be like, if there was to be one at all.

Anxious parents wiped at little noses and tugged at little hands. The allglass-everything foyer to the Upton wing looked like it had been invaded by an army of baby “Thing T. Things.” The expression on the receptionist’s face betrayed her, and anyone could guess she wouldn’t have been surprised if the real Addams family showed up next.

An insomnia pandemic is sweeping the globe, leaving people unable to function and society on the brink of collapse...

Dr. Cooper Delaney believes he has the answer: Noctural, a new sleep-aid—one with absolutely no side-effects—which in early testing shows 100% effectiveness.

The only problem is, it doesn’t work. With no warning. No explanation.

Unable to accept the drug’s inexplicable failure and unwilling to concede to the competition, lines are crossed, ethical boundaries are pushed to the breaking point, and disturbing realizations come to light that could completely unravel civilization as we know it… and throw into question humanity’s place in the universe.
