YOUR JOURNEY TO PUBLICATION BY COLLEEN HOUCK

I remember the first time I told my family I was writing a book. We were out to dinner at a Chinese restaurant to celebrate my sister’s and my nephew’s birthday. After our meals were brought out, I handed around a stack of notecards with pictures of my characters and character descriptions. I explained the entire premise of the book and spoke excitedly for at least ten minutes before I realized they were all just eating and not staring in rapt attention. Mom was really the only one who believed I’d accomplish what I was trying to do. Once the book was done and they read it, I gained a lot more support.

I started dabbling in writing when the doctor’s told me I couldn’t have children. It broke my heart and writing was a way to fill the void. Even so, I didn’t seriously begin writing until after reading the stories of Stephenie Meyer and J. K. Rowling. These were two middle aged women who just got up and did it. Before them, writers were always these untouchable scholarly types who sipped tea and discussed philosophy in Ivy League colleges. The example of these two seemingly ordinary ladies gave me the courage to try putting pen to paper.

I finished Tiger’s Curse in 2008 and then self—published both Tiger’s Curse and Tiger’s Quest in 2009 mostly so my distant relatives could read the books. To my surprise, Tiger’s Curse hit the bestseller list in January of 2010 and I was soon offered representation and a book contract. Now I’m working on my twelfth book and preparing for two book releases this year. Time has gone by fast. I’m now beginning my tenth year of writing and I love it just as much now as I did then. My books and career has brought my family closer together and I’ve been able to do some amazing things and see some incredible places because of it. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.

TEN QUOTES FROM TIGER’S DREAM
1) “Phet,” I said simply. “What brings you to my version of hell?”

The man took hold of my shoulder and peered at me with lucid brown eyes.

“Kishan,” he said gravely, “Kelsey needs you.”

2) The weight of the world suddenly seemed as if it fell upon my shoulders and I was no Atlas with the strength to carry the load. I’d break under the burden.

3) “I know value when I see it too,” I spat. “And you aren’t worth the lice living on the backs of beetles, eating the dung that clings to your camel’s—”

4) “I know I’m not worthy of you,” I said, rubbing my thumb across her knuckles. “I didn’t save you when you needed me. I wasn’t the companion you deserved.”

5) “Beautiful warrior goddess, Durga, is strong. She speak to my ear. Very soft are her words, but smart mans listen, women. Particularly, goddess.”

6) “Shall we pick up where we left off, tiger?” a smooth voice asked.

7) I was about to grab her when she twisted away in a backflip, kicking my chin in the process. When she stood again, the sword was back in her hand. “That is so typical of you,” she said. “Biting the hand that feeds you.”

“You’re getting me confused with a dog,” I said. “I’m perfectly capable of feeding myself.”

8) “Fondness is the word I use to describe my weapons or my favorite horse or, what was it called, ah, popcorn. What I feel for you has become a constant ache in my heart.

9) “If their hearts beat for one another in such a way, why did they hesitate to form a bond?”

“There could be a number of reasons.”

“Such as?”

“Timing, first of all. Sometimes life gets in the way.”

“I do not understand this reason.”

10) “Why do men always think they can steer a woman in the direction they wish simply by creating rules?” she asked.

“Maybe men like rules so they know exactly what to expect. Rules make for an orderly life.”

“Ha! Or-der-ly?” she yelled, shoving my shoulder. “More like or-der. Your kind of order.” She accented each word with a jab of her finger against my chest. “The kind where you can tell me what to do.”

A tiger left behind.

A goddess in need of an ally.

Stranded in a time and place he never wished for, Kishan Rajaram must carry out his destiny of assisting the beautiful yet extremely irritable goddess Durga. This daunting task is not made easy by the fact that he must also face the truth about the girl he loves and the brother who stole her away.

When the wily shaman Phet appears and tells Kishan that Kelsey needs him, he jumps at the chance to see her again. In his efforts to save her, Kishan discovers that the curse he thought was over is just beginning. As time unravels around him, Kishan realizes that the fates of all those he holds dear lie in hands.

The goddess’s power hangs in the balance. Kishan has no choice but to sacrifice the unthinkable to fight the dark forces swirling around the woman he’s charged to protect. As he does, he discovers that love and loyalty create their own magic and accepts that he must decide his destiny once and for all.

Tiger’s Dream is the conclusion to the epic Tiger’s Curse fantasy romance series that left you breathless.

TIGER'S DREAM BY COLLEEN HOUCK EXCERPT

When the men came to a stop before Shala and Wyea, the twin gods raised their arms to hush the crowd. “We’ve kept her face hidden from you though all of you have heard her voice and responded to her call. She is our savior. Sent by the ancients who have gifted us with a new home. And now she has descended to this plane to serve and live among us. Meet our love. Our Lawala newly sprung.”

The woman didn’t move. The honey tone of her skin shone in the light of the temple with the same sheen of heat that dampened my own skin. I sucked in a breath and waited along with the crowd.

One of the gods, the sharp-eyed one known as Shala, looked down, his mouth a hard line that covered the gleaming white teeth of his politician’s smile from a moment before. “Dear one,” he said, his tone dripping with a false patience, “rise and greet your people.”

Groaning, the woman’s fingers dug into the fibers of the litter. The man above twitched his fingers, manipulating her like a puppet. Her arms shook as she lifted her body. As the crowd cheered, she swayed drunkenly, her emerald eyes bleary and unfocused.

Ana!

The men turned her in circle so everyone could gaze upon the goddess.

TEN FAVORITE GUY CHARACTERS FROM YOUR BOOKS, INCLUDING RANDOM FACTS ABOUT THEM.
Mr. Kadam-He loves nothing more than tea time and, in fact, drinks tea the British way every afternoon.

Dr. Hassan-He owns a fedora hat in every color.

Lily’s Grandfather-Lily’s grandpop is no longer living in the Reawakened series, but his presence is still felt. He and Nana may not have had a shotgun wedding.

Amon-In addition to Danishes, Amon also loves cherry pie, but he hates pumpkin.

Osiris-Created water lilies, the flower Lily was named after. Fun facts: The goddess Durga also loves flowers and gifted Kelsey with a wreath of them. Ren gives Kelsey tiger lilies since they are her favorite flower and remind her of him.

Faunus-One of the Silvanae, Faunus knows much more than people think. He plays his pan pipes in a certain melody that jogs his memory. It works with a special sort of magic and he can remember things, even when a certain goddess tries to erase them.

Murphy-The pilot friend of Mr. Kadam is a sweet natured and faithful friend who has seen much more than he can explain. My dachshund is named after him.

Cherty-The ferryman who takes Lily and company to the Netherworld is a brave but crusty old sailor. He asked for the job of ferryman when he was still alive. Only he and Amun-Ra know why.

Nebu-The unicorn returns in Reunited to help Lily fight in the battle of the cosmos against Seth. He has a fondness for pretty girls and grazing on dandelions.

Li-I’ve always loved martial arts and Li is someone who’d be really fun to hang out with. Don’t tell his grandmother, but he prefers pizza over her home cooking.

Bonus: Fanindra-She may be related to both dragons and phoenixes.

A sibling rivalry.
A forbidden romance.
A spell that changes everything.

In Heliopolis secrets abound and passions ignite as chaos rises.

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Tiger’s Curse series and Reawakened comes a novella full of celestial marvel, passion, betrayal, and evil that will grow to reign over humanity forever.

Before Lily and Amon met, before the cosmos was in chaos and needed three brave brothers to fight off evil, there were four siblings who helped rule the earth.

Each sibling had a special gift. Osiris, the god of agriculture, helped mortals to grow and thrive in their natural environment. Isis, the goddess of creation, fostered health and wellness. Nephthys, the seer, was able to keep the balance between all living beings and the universe. But Seth, the youngest sibling, was left without any special powers. The Waters of Chaos, which granted each god’s talent, were running dry, and Seth was paying the price.

As time passed, however, Seth’s determination and willfulness resulted in a very special gift, one that should have granted him the ability to enact wondrous change. But Seth’s competitive childhood gave him a heart so cold and vacant that instead, his gift brought about great evil.

Seth was now the god of unmaking, the creator of disorder and destruction. And he was ready to seek his revenge, dominating all who got in his way.

After cupping her hand with his, he added, with an almost desperate hiss, “Such a thing is forbidden.”

“I thought we already talked about that aspect.”

“Yes, but . . . this is different. Think of the consequences.”

“And what are the consequences of a life lived without love?”

He gently removed her hand from his chest and pressed it between his own. “You can’t mean this, Isis. You don’t understand.”

“I understand loneliness and longing.” She brought her other wing around until they stood in the midst of them. “I understand now that it was always you.”

TEN THINGS I WOULD CHANGE ABOUT MY HIGH SCHOOL YEARS

1) JOIN MORE CLUBS: I think I could have really enjoyed being in an actual club that did something. I had a lot of good ideas and a drive to accomplish things that I never utilized at school because I was afraid to stand out.

2) ASK SOMEONE ON A DATE: I had a few crushes in high school and they were all really stand up guys who might’ve even said yes. Even if they had said no it would have been a good growing experience and it might have made me less timid.

3) RAISE MY HAND: I was often too scared to bring attention to myself to answer questions in class but if I had I might have excelled in school and learned a lot more.

4) BE A BETTER FRIEND: There were people I could have been better friends with if I had been a little more outgoing. Thinking of what they needed in a friend more than what I needed should have been my go-to instinct.

5) SAY THANK YOU: I had some really great teachers in high school that I should have thanked. I visited my high school recently and was sad to note that all my teachers are gone. It would have been nice if I’d thanked them for the incredibly hard work they did on my behalf.

6) SAY WHAT I THINK: There were so many times that I had the perfect quip or joke or knew the answer to a question or could have led a group and I didn’t. I think that led me to being a writer in some ways. Now I get to say what I think all the time to a very public audience but in high school I was very reserved.

7) ATTEND A CONCERT: Back in high school I loved music but I never had the money or the means to go to a concert, even if my dad would have allowed it. I regret missing out on some great bands and singers that will never come around again like Michael Jackson, Journey, and Wham! I finally saw The New Kids on the Block & The Back Street Boys with my sisters a few years ago and it was fantastic. Still holding out hope on seeing Bon Jovi. =)

8) GET PROFESSIONAL PICTURES: All of my high school pictures with the exception of the senior one were terrible. I really needed some help with my hair and clothing selections. I needed a personal shopper or, at the very least, the internet to help me choose the best look.

9) PLAY MORE SPORTS: I was really good at basketball and volleyball but I never pursued it. At the very least I would have been healthier for exercising more.

10) TAKE DIFFERENT CLASSES: I often tried to take the easiest classes instead of what interested me or what would offer the greatest academic challenge. I was always good at math and should have pursued it at a higher level. Also art history and creative writing were interesting to me too. I wished I’d pushed myself more academically.

Before the curse, there was a promise.

A prequel to the bestselling Tiger’s Curse series, this much anticipated novella recalls the beginning of Ren and Kishan’s story. Before Kelsey there was a girl, raised by a villain, whose love for a hero changed the course of history.

Trapped under the thumb of her abusive and powerful father Lokesh, Yesubai struggles to keep her own magical abilities secret while evading his dark powers. When Lokesh promises Yesubai to the prince of a neighboring kingdom, she becomes the central pawn in his plot to destroy the ruling family and take power for himself. Yesubai is trapped by her father’s threats and desperate to protect the man she comes to love, but she knows that any decision she makes will have dire consequences. As dark forces gather around her, Yesubai must decide if she’s willing to reveal that somewhere deep within her she has the power to change everything.

Before the curse, there was a promise. The anticipated novella, Tiger’s Promise (The Tiger Saga 0.5), tells the origins of Ren and Kishan’s captivating story. In the center of it is a girl named Yesubai. Trying to keep her magical abilities a secret will be difficult to hide from her villainous and abusive father, Lokesh. His plans consist of taking power over a neighboring kingdom by using his own daughter as a pawn. As Lokesh promises the prince to his daughter’s hand, dark forces begin to fill Yesubai’s world and she will have to decide if she’s willing to use her powers to protect the ones she loves and ultimate change the course of history.

It just feels good to be back in this world. This novella instantly brought back the excitement and heartbreak that the previous books have brought. Houck brilliantly give fans a thrilling book and an exhilarating look into the past history of their favorite characters. The build-up to the curse is absolutely amazing. The crafting of the story as well as character build-up are just incredible and expected.

There are books that will resonate with readers forever. The Tiger’s Curse series certainly had that effect. Reading about their origins and beginnings provided new perspectives on characters. Readers will appreciate just how lucid the books intertwine together. For readers that have read Tiger’s Curse series, it will be just as exciting as for readers who are jumping into this incredible story blind. The immaculate storytelling style of Houck fits perfectly with the tone and provided a comfy front row seat that bridges the story into Tiger’s Curse.
